Rev. Michelle Matthews was appointed as pastor of The Kingstowne Communion July 1, 2015.
Although she was born in Akron, Ohio, Michelle spent most of her grade school, college, and early adulthood years in the Hampton Roads area, growing up in Chesapeake, attending Old Dominion University in Norfolk, and buying her first home in Virginia Beach.
An English Journalism major in undergrad, Michelle was a
writer and editor for TravelHost Magazine of Virginia Beach and taught high school English and journalism for four years
in the inner city of Norfolk.
She and her husband Chris moved to Durham, North Carolina in 2012 for Michelle to obtain her 3-year ministerial degree from Duke Divinity School, but in the first year, after teaching high school math for 7 years, Chris received his dream job as an actuary with GEICO in Washington, DC.
Michelle and Chris have lived separately for the last two years and are excited to
now be rooting themselves together in the Kingstowne area of Alexandria.
Before and throughout divinity school, Michelle and Chris helped to launch and served within 3 different United Methodist church plants and are easily energized by fresh expressions of church.
In her leisure, Michelle enjoys reading, sketching, singing karaoke, watching at least one Friends episode a day, avidly cheering on Duke Basketball, traveling, and delighting in the local sights, sounds, and tastes of DC with Chris and their schnauzer mix Tootie.
