Ms. Q's Corner

The Season of Lent is a period of 40 days, begins on Ash Wednesday, and is a period of introspection and reflection on the life, ministry, and teachings of Jesus. Episcopal author and theologian Barbara Brown Taylor says that Lent is a “springtime for the soul...Forty days to cleanse the system and open the eyes to what remains when all comfort is gone. Forty days to remember what it is like to live by the grace of God alone and not by what we can supply for ourselves.”

The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple he found people selling cattle, sheep, and doves and the money changers seated at their tables. Making a whip of cords, he drove all of them out of the temple, with the sheep and the cattle. He also poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. He told those who were selling the doves, “Take these things out of here! Stop making my Father’s house a marketplace!” His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for your house will consume me.” The Jews then said to him, “What sign can you show us for doing this?” Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” The Jews then said, “This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and will you raise it up in three days?” But he was speaking of the temple of his body. After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.

This Week's BIG Questions

  • We are in the season of Lent when we focus on Jesus’ journey to his death, return to life, and the call to follow his ways. How did you feel when hearing Jesus got angry, scared people, and made a mess of others’ belongings?
  • What parts of this story surprised you?
  • Tell a story of a time you saw someone in an unexpected place and how your body reacted when you saw them. Then, discuss the different bodily reactions mentioned.
  •  By making a big scene, Jesus drew attention to both his prediction that the temple would be destroyed and his anticipation of a time when every person’s heart and home would be like the temple itself, a home for God. How is your church, home, and heart a home for God?
  • Lent is a time to reassess where and how we meet God in our lives. What things in your life can consume you and lead you away from connecting with God?

The Wave by Tyler Charlton
When a boy is swept up in a wave of sadness, he finds himself tumbling. But when he remembers that this sadness won't last forever, and that the wave will eventually carry him back to shore, he discovers his friends and family waiting to gently pull him out of the water and back home.

Wherever You Are by Glenys Nellist, illustrated by Sian James
Wherever you are, God is there.
God is in the gently falling snow, the river, and the honeybee. God is in the people you meet. God is in city streets and country lanes. God is in laughter and tears. No matter where you go, how you are feeling, or what you do, God is with you.

The World Jesus Knew by Marc Olson, illustrated by Jemima Maybank
What was the world like when Jesus was alive? What did he and his followers eat? How did they work? Where did they live? What did they believe about God and the world? And how does all of it affect the way we read and understand the stories of Jesus in the Bible?
Curious kids wonder about these questions--and The World Jesus Knew is full of answers. Filled with colorful illustrations, maps, charts, graphs, and fun infographics, it's a book curious kids (and adults!) will pore over for hours on end, jam-packed with information and facts that will surprise and enlighten.

Look it Up! Just how big was the Temple in Jesus’ time? Look up the Temple in Jerusalem. What similarities and differences do you notice between our church and the Temple’s busy marketplace and worship center? Only certain people could go to specific places in that temple. How it would feel not to be allowed in certain parts of the church?

Where We Experience God
need: playdough
This week's passage reminds us how people in biblical times believed they could only encounter God in the Temple. Jesus came to show everyone God meets us where we are. For us, the church isn’t the only place to experience God’s presence either.
Each person should use playdough to create a place where they have experienced God’s presence. You might offer suggestions of places people find God’s presence (in nature, around friends or family, by a fire, etc.). When finished, ask each family member to describe the place they created.
